History
In 1540 Coronado explored the Southwest and came through the area we now know as Costilla County. This was the first area in Colorado to be colonized. It is also is home to its oldest town, San Luis, incorporated in 1851. This land was once a part of the Spanish land grants decreed by the King of Spain. Even to this day here are strong ties to Spain’s artistic, cultural, and religious traditions in the area. Costilla County Colorado Land Sale a great place to call home!
It was one of the original 17 counties in the Territory of Colorado. Created on November 1st, 1861, the county is named after the Costilla River. The original boundaries extended over most of Southern Colorado. Furthermore, in 1866 a large portion in the north was split into Saguache County. In addition, in 1874 the Hinsdale and Rio Grande counties took the western portion. Finally, in 1913 Alamosa County was created from its boundaries and Costilla County arrived at its current size.
The County of Costilla is made up of two incorporated towns, San Luis and Blanca. Yet, the larger Fort Garland is not incorporated, along with 7 other smaller unincorporated communities. There are 4 reservoirs: Eastdale, Sanchez, Smith, and Mountain Home Reservoirs. This area is great for fishing and boating. The area also offers some of the best big game hunting in Colorado. It is today about 1,227 square miles of land and 304 square miles of water.
Climate
They get about 9 inches of rain and 21 inches of snow. On average and about 56 days of precipitation a year. Usually there are about 285 days of sun with July highs of 81 degrees and January lows of 3 degrees. The average elevation is 8,829 feet.
Attractions
The first thing you notice about this Costilla County Colorado Land Sale is the sheer beauty of the San Luis Valley. However, there are also many cultural attractions in the area too. On a mesa in the center of San Luis lies the Stations of the Cross Shrine. The Shrine features nearly life sized bronze statues of the 15 Stations. They represent the last hour of Christ’s life to resurrection. Resulting in thousands of visitors a year. Furthermore, hundreds of people that walk from as far as Pueblo to the shrine on pilgrimage. San Luis is also home to the Sangre de Cristo Parish Church built in 1886. Another thing it is home to the oldest continuously operated business in Colorado, the R&R Supermarket. One other highlight is the San Luis Museum and Cultural Center.
Fort Garland has a museum at the old 1858 frontier army fort once commanded by Kit Carson. Blanca, the town, is known for its stunning views of the towering Blanca Peak. Which is a towering peak which stands over the San Luis Valley at 14,345 feet. Just a little west of San Luis there is the village of San Acacio. Home of the oldest Christian structure in Colorado built back in 1856.
